MONTHLY QUR'AN SEMINAR

The Beauty of the Qur'an: Tafsir of Surah ar-Rahman

About

British Academy of Qur'anic Studies (BAQS) presents a one-day intensive course on:

Surah ar-Rahman follows a simple beautiful rhythm, with the meaning and intonation of the verses reinforcing the main theme of the surah, which is manifesting two of Allah’s attributes: His Mercy and Grace.

The surah brings to light the wonders of Allah's power, His countless blessings and our own helplessness and accountability before Him. We are forewarned of the grave consequences of disobedience to Allah (swt) and the best results of obedience to Him (glorious and exalted is He).

This is the only surah of the Qur’an in which mankind and the jinn [the other creation on earth with freedom of will and action], are directly addressed and made to realise the wonders of Allah (swt) power. They are invited to ponder 31 times in this surah of 78 verses: “Then which of the favours of your Lord will you [both] deny?’’

Ask yourself…

  • Do you deny your Lords favours?
  • Can you answer with a degree of certainty, “Oh Allah, I do not deny your favours”
  • Do your actions support this claim?
  • Are you in a state of thankful recognition of Allah’s countless blessings on you or your focus on what you do not have or you’re yet to receive?

Attend the Beauty of the Qur’an: Tafsir Surah ar-Rahman and…

  • Learn about creation and origination.
  • Understand the correct way to manifest your appreciation of Allah’s favours.
  • Discover the rewards that Allah has prepared for those who merely believe in Him and His Messenger (saw) and those who go the extra mile to excel in their deen in this life.
  • Be certain of what awaits those who do not abandon shirk and disobedience to Allah.
  • Know what we have to do to be among those who enjoy the delights of paradise and avoid the horrors of the day of resurrection.

Verily this (Qur’an) is an admonition, so whosoever wills, let him take a Path to his Lord. (76:29)

Take a decisive step towards Allah and
Enrol onto The Beauty of the Qur’an: Tafsir Surah ar-Rahman

The Ultimate Destination: Tafsir of Surah al-Waqi’ah

About

British Academy of Qur'anic Studies (BAQS) presents a one-day intensive course on:

The vivid pictures of reward and punishment all encourage hope and fear and are especially needed now in a time in which science, technology and communications are making people heedless of the Next World and are diverting them from acting for it. Surah al-Waqi’ah puts forward a challenge for you all; is anyone able to escape their end? Can you, however much you support one another, defend yourselves against death or even help a friend or relative escape it? Will you realise the fates that await you? Whether you heed or are heedless, that will not change the facts.

The course will explore the themes covered in the surah which include…

  • The inevitable event (Day of Judgement)
  • How this universe will be destroyed
  • How the entire Mankind will be separated into 3 groups
  • The rewards of the dwellers of the Paradise
  • The punishment of the dwellers of Hell
  • Who provides the fundamental requirements of human life, like cultivation, plantation, water, fire, salt, etc?

Join us and leave with an increased understanding of…

  • The background and virtues of the surah
  • The proofs that death, resurrection and accountability for one’s actions in this world is certain
  • The rewards to be bestowed on or punishment to be meted out by Allah in the hereafter
  • What to do to ensure that we fall within the groups which will find Allah’s favour in the hereafter

Overcome the current economical situation through surah al-Waqi’ah…

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud reported that the Prophet (saw) said, ‘Whoever recites surah al-Waqi’ah at night would never encounter poverty.’ [Bayhaqi]

The Prophet (saw) said, ‘Surah al-Waqi’ah is the Surah of Wealth, so recite it and teach it to your children.’ [Ibn Asakir]

MONTHLY QUR'AN SEMINAR

The Greatest Surah & The Greatest Ayah in the Qur’an

About

British Academy of Qur'anic Studies (BAQS) in association with Birkbeck ISOC present a one-day intensive course on:

Surah al-Fatihah (The Opening) is not only the first chapter of the Qur’an but also the ‘gateway’ to the Qur’an. It acts as both an introduction to and a summary of the whole Qur’an. It is a supplication (du’a) for guidance and the whole Qur’an is presented as a response to that supplication. It is one of the earliest revelations and these ‘seven oft-repeated’ verses in prayer. The surah stresses the Lordship and all-pervading Mercy of Allah and shows us the true relationship between our Creator and creation. It is described as the ‘Mother of the Qur’an’ and the ‘Greatest Surah in the Qur’an’.

Ayatul Kursi (Verse of the Throne) is described in the Hadith as the ‘Greatest verse (ayah) in the Qur’an’. This unique verse of ten statements, describes the majesty of Allah and His dominion over the world as symbolised by the ‘Throne’. It is said that the ‘Greatest Name of Allah’, through which supplications are accepted, is contained within it. You are encouraged to recite this sacred verse in the morning and evening, before going to sleep and after the obligatory prayers for blessings, to ward off evil and protection from Satan.

During this course, we will analyse every word and elaborate their meaning and occurrence in the Qur’an in the light of classical and contemporary Tafsir. Come and find out about the descriptions of our Creator in the greatest surah and ayah of the Qur’an and how reflection on the Divine Names is a vital tool in understanding the Qur’an.

Qur’anic Du’a Course

About

British Academy of Qur'anic Studies (BAQS) presents...

A Two-day intensive course

Exploring the Du’as of the Prophets and Believers from the Qur’an

The impulse to pray is among the most universal and innate of human behaviours – asking God to relieve, pardon, give, soothe, protect, guide, forgive, support, save and bless. Whether said in silence or uttered aloud, with others or alone, prayer has always been at the core of spiritual wellness - the lasting answer to an uncompromising condition of life.

This course on Qur’anic du’as will present a lucid, bold and moving account of the Qur’an’s “heroes of prayer” especially the Prophets (including Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad (may Allah bless them and grant them peace)), as well as believing men and women, and angels. These du’as and supplications are presented in the context of their missions and circumstances and bear extraordinary relevance to our world and lives today.

Purposes of Islamic Law
Title   The Purposes of Islamic Law
(Maqasid al-Shariah)
About

Islamic Institute for Development & Research [IIDR] in association with LSE SU Islamic Society.

Why is giving charity (zakah) one of Islam's principal 'pillars'? What are the physical and spiritual benefits of fasting the month of Ramadan? Why is drinking any amount of alcohol a major sin in Islam? What is the link between today's notions of human rights and Islamic law? How can the Islamic law contribute to 'development' and 'civility'? 'Maqasid al-Shari'ah' are principles that provide answers to the above questions and similar questions about Islamic law.

This is a unique introductory course to the Maqasid or purposes of Islamic law. It will cover various definitions and classifications of Maqasid and their relation with theories in traditional schools of Islamic law. Traditional and contemporary classifications of maqasid will be compared in order to uncover the effect of 'worldviews' on the conceptions of the theory. You will also explore the contribution of pioneering Islamic jurists such as Imam al-Juwaini, Ghazali and Shatibi in developing the Maqasid theory. Maqasid as a methodology for 'renewal' in Islamic thought will be introduced through 'modern' and 'postmodern' theories of Islamic law.

British Academy of Qur'anic Studies (BAQS) in association with Birkbeck ISOC present...

A unique double weekend (4 day) intensive course in Ramadan providing an overview of the whole Qur'an.

This course will provide an overview of the structure, themes and guidance provided in each of the 114 chapters of the Qur'an. This will be done by providing a systematic study of each of the surahs as follows:

  • How surah names are related to each surah and the historical context of its revelations (asbab al-nuzul)

  • Inter-textual relationship and coherence (nazm) between the verses of each surah and the relationship with the preceding/following surah

  • Cross-reference to other parts of the Qur'an to demonstrate how 'the Qur'an explains the Qur'an'

  • Discussion on linguistic and stylistic devices (balagha), problems with translation/interpretation and alternative plausible interpretations

  • Practical guidance and lessons that can be derived from each surah

About

A Two-Day Course covering:

1. How to Approach the Qur’an

Understanding the Book of Allah is one of the most important blessings a person can experience. Hassan al-Basri said regarding the verse, “Our Lord give us good in this life”
goodness in this life is understanding the Qu’ran. Join us as we
engage in the steps needed to acquire and develop our intimacy with the Qur’an.

2. How to Approach the Sunnah

The Messenger of Allah is a light sent from Allah. Engaging his
sunnah is an important step in living and articulating Islamic values. However, the sunnah is often misrepresented by those who hold on to two extremes: hyper literalism or over zealous dispensation. This course will provide one with important tools that will enable one to engage the sunnah in a robust and
holistic manner.
