Purposes of Islamic Law
Title   The Purposes of Islamic Law
(Maqasid al-Shariah)
About

Islamic Institute for Development & Research [IIDR] in association with LSE SU Islamic Society.

Why is giving charity (zakah) one of Islam's principal 'pillars'? What are the physical and spiritual benefits of fasting the month of Ramadan? Why is drinking any amount of alcohol a major sin in Islam? What is the link between today's notions of human rights and Islamic law? How can the Islamic law contribute to 'development' and 'civility'? 'Maqasid al-Shari'ah' are principles that provide answers to the above questions and similar questions about Islamic law.

This is a unique introductory course to the Maqasid or purposes of Islamic law. It will cover various definitions and classifications of Maqasid and their relation with theories in traditional schools of Islamic law. Traditional and contemporary classifications of maqasid will be compared in order to uncover the effect of 'worldviews' on the conceptions of the theory. You will also explore the contribution of pioneering Islamic jurists such as Imam al-Juwaini, Ghazali and Shatibi in developing the Maqasid theory. Maqasid as a methodology for 'renewal' in Islamic thought will be introduced through 'modern' and 'postmodern' theories of Islamic law.

British Academy of Qur'anic Studies (BAQS) in association with Birkbeck ISOC present...

A unique double weekend (4 day) intensive course in Ramadan providing an overview of the whole Qur'an.

This course will provide an overview of the structure, themes and guidance provided in each of the 114 chapters of the Qur'an. This will be done by providing a systematic study of each of the surahs as follows:

  • How surah names are related to each surah and the historical context of its revelations (asbab al-nuzul)

  • Inter-textual relationship and coherence (nazm) between the verses of each surah and the relationship with the preceding/following surah

  • Cross-reference to other parts of the Qur'an to demonstrate how 'the Qur'an explains the Qur'an'

  • Discussion on linguistic and stylistic devices (balagha), problems with translation/interpretation and alternative plausible interpretations

  • Practical guidance and lessons that can be derived from each surah

This is the first time that such a course is run and it will definitely enrich your understanding of the divine revelation in this blessed month in which the Qur'an was revealed!

This is an opportunity not be missed!

About

A Two-Day Course covering:

1. How to Approach the Qur’an

Understanding the Book of Allah is one of the most important blessings a person can experience. Hassan al-Basri said regarding the verse, “Our Lord give us good in this life”
goodness in this life is understanding the Qu’ran. Join us as we
engage in the steps needed to acquire and develop our intimacy with the Qur’an.

2. How to Approach the Sunnah

The Messenger of Allah is a light sent from Allah. Engaging his
sunnah is an important step in living and articulating Islamic values. However, the sunnah is often misrepresented by those who hold on to two extremes: hyper literalism or over zealous dispensation. This course will provide one with important tools that will enable one to engage the sunnah in a robust and
holistic manner.
